Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group: February 2009 Meeting

I am a little late to post details of the UG meeting held on 21st February 2009, and I feel bad for keeping you waiting for so long. I was busy finishing some assignments at work. I am flying to Seattle tomorrow to attend the MVP Global Summit. I hope I will have a great time meeting other SQL Server MVPs and many of the SQL Server Team members.

Coming back to the UG meeting, we really had a wonderful time discussing many of the basic SQL Server questions. Pinal Dave has already posted a very detailed blog post covering the activities. He did a wonderful session where he presented some very interesting points related to the way SQL Server Query Optimizer uses indexes.

My session was more of an interactive discussion. While writing my series of posts on SQL Server IDENTITY columns, I came across several interesting questions and I then compiled a long list of 65 questions. We discussed those 65 questions and their answers and the 'why-how' part of each of them. I will create a PDF document with those questions and will make them available for download.

Ahmedabad SQL Server UG - January 2009 Meeting (Jan 17, 2009)

Ahmedabad SQL Server UG had the first UG meeting of 2009, yesterday. We discussed a number of interesting topics and I am pretty sure everyone enjoyed the sessions.

I had been presenting a series of sessions on 'SQL Server Query Optimization Basics' in the past few sessions and presented 'SQL Server Query Optimization Basics -  Part 3' Yesterday. We discussed Query Plan Caching in much detail.

For those of you who missed the sessions, I started writing a series of blog posts that covers all the points we discussed in the previous sessions. You can find the first blog post here. I will add a number of follow up posts soon.

Pinal Dave, SQL Server MVP and Vice President of the UG, presented an interesting session on 'Understanding indexes and sorting'. Pinal will post more details about this and will upload the presentation soon on his blog site.

Imran Bhadelia did a wonderful presentation on the MERGE keyword introduced by SQL Server 2008. This initiated a number of interesting discussions where the performance differences, triggers, capturing the output of the operation and usage of XML were discussed.

News: "SQL Hour" at Patni Computer Systems (4 Oct 2008)

Ahmedabad SQL Server User Group has started organizing a special event, "SQL Hour", where we visit IT companies and interact with the SQL Server professionals. We had the first meeting this Saturday, 4th October 2008 at Patni Computer Systems, Gandhinangar.

The meeting lasted for 2 hours and it went very interesting. People were very responsive and came up with a number of questions that initiated new discussions on various interesting topics. Pinal presented an interesting session titled "Know your SQL". His presentation was followed by mine, on "Query Optimization Basics".

"SQL Hour" at Patni was very productive, very interesting and we are very much happy about it. If you are interested to host "SQL Hour" at your company, contact us and we will be happy to meet you.

News: Ahmedabad SQL Server UG Meeting - Yesterday, 20th September 2008

We had a wonderful time discussing various SQL Server related topics, yesterday. The primary attraction was an excellent session by SQL Server MVP, Pinal Dave, on CTE (Common Table Expressions). He explained CTE in great detail, discussed the cases where a CTE can help and initiated a wonderful discussion on recursive CTE.

His session was followed by a short presentation by me on a few real life examples of Recursive CTE. We discussed the internals of recursive CTEs in a bit detail. We took the execution plan of a recursive query (that uses a CTE) and discussed how the query processor might actually be doing the recursion. Then we did a TSQL demo that performs similar operation (that the query processor does with a recursive query) using a WHILE loop.

It was a great time interacting with a lot of SQL Server professionals and a few people raised questions that initiated interesting discussions on various SQL Server topics.

For those of you who missed the UG meeting, there is nothing to download/replay, other than the following photographs :-)
